Sharpham Meadow Natural Burial Ground is run by The Green Funeral Company for The Sharpham Trust, a non-profit making charity, and offers you an ecological alternative to traditional burial or cremation.
It is open to you, regardless of your faith or local residency, whether you are using a funeral director or not, having a religious or secular ceremony, or none at all. Ashes can be interred here as well as burials.
The burial ground will be a beautiful wild flower meadow where all nature can thrive. We want it to be an egalitarian space that is pure, natural, uncluttered and spacious. The ground will occasionally be grazed by sheep, while the paths connecting the grave areas will be mown. The whole area will be run in accordance with the guidelines created by The Association of Natural Burial Grounds.
All coffins will need to be biodegradable and made from natural material. Graves will be shallower than the traditional six feet as this is a natural burial ground. Embalmed bodies are not allowed, except in exceptional circumstances.
Instead of upright headstones, there is the option to buy anehgraved slate gravestone with the name and dates of the person buried. These will be placed flush with the ground.
The ceremonial heart of the ground is the firepit, and every family will be able to have a fire during their ceremonial time, if they so wish.
There is a beautiful oval ceremonial shelter built of cob and Sharpham larch at the meadow. This is the perfect place to hold a ceremony, shelter from inclement weather or simply sit in contemplation.
There are no time restrictions on any funeral service and night time vigils and funerals will be possible. In the future, you will be very welcome to return to the meadow at any time during daylight hours.
Claire and Rupert Callender, handle the day-today management of the ground and they will show you around by appointment. They can lead your ceremony or liaise with the undertaker of your choice.
